Is Cookie Scan free and do I need to sign up?
Yes, scanning a website is completely free and we don't ask for your email or any account. Just enter a URL and start the scan.
Why do you check cookies before I accept the cookie banner?
Under the ePrivacy Directive and GDPR, only cookies that are strictly necessary for the site to function are allowed to be set before a visitor gives consent. The "Before consent" results show you exactly what your site stores before that consent is given, so you can spot anything that shouldn't be there.
Where does the "Category" information come from?
Known cookies are matched against the Open Cookie Database, an open-source project that documents cookie names, categories, descriptions, products and the organisations behind them.
From where is the scan performed?
Scans run from a server located inside the European Union (Frankfurt, Germany), so the results reflect what's actually stored for EU visitors, including any location-aware cookies that only appear for EU-based users.
Will this replace my cookie banner or Consent Management Platform?
No. Cookie Scan is a detection and audit tool, not a Consent Management Platform. It helps you see what you actually need a banner for in the first place, so you can potentially simplify or remove unnecessary tracking instead of just adding another cookie banner.
